ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of research on diaspora philanthropy aimed at aiding Syrians affected by the decade-long Syrian civil war, as engaged in by ancestral Syrians and more recent Syrian migrants. The chapter discusses the nature of Syrian diaspora philanthropy, motivations for philanthropy among Syrian diaspora members, the advantages of Syrian diaspora philanthropy in contexts of violent conflict and the potential role of Syrian diaspora philanthropy in peacebuilding. The chapter concludes by considering the drawbacks and limitations of Syrian diaspora philanthropy in the Syria crisis. The chapter highlights the unique advantages of diaspora actors in humanitarian aid and discusses the advantages that derive from Syrian cultural practices and social networks, which enhance the effectiveness of diaspora aid.
