ABSTRACT

Our communication studies major involves sequences in organizational, interpersonal, and political communication and includes additional specific courses in aging, family, rhetorical, leadership, small-group, nonverbal, and computer-mediated communication. After receiving a grant from our International Studies Program, we have developed a plan to enhance our major by a process of internationalization. Our goal is to add global components to each course in our major, which can include but is not limited to additional readings, enhanced assignments, focused exercises, and activities to raise student awareness regarding international issues. Faculty have received workshop trainings, materials, and other help to revise syllabi and develop targeted international learning outcomes. We conducted pre-tests for each course so that we can assess and evaluate our internationalization efforts. Overall, we will discuss in this chapter how we are implementing a theory-based approach to internationalizing a communication major. We will describe the entire process-research, planning, grant requests, workshop trainings, assessment procedures, etc.-so that others interested in globalized communication can learn from our challenges and successes.
