ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin (DOCG) area, a territory consisting of 15 municipalities where the famous Prosecco wine is historically produced. It focuses on Recevin and the rationality and organization of the European Wine City, and looks more in depth into the Conegliano Valdobbiadene 2016 experience. The chapter provides interpretative insight on the 2016 candidacy process, its impact and effects, discussing the strengths and weaknesses that emerged from in-depth interviews conducted by the author. The European Wine City 2016 was awarded to a territory composed of 15 municipalities located 50 kilometers north of Venice and belonging to the Province of Treviso, currently Italy’s most productive wine-growing area. Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG was also officially recognized by the Veneto Region as an agro-food district devoted specifically to the production of sparkling wines, with positive performances in 2016 and 2017.
