ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies African elements found in the function and performance of sport by introducing “Kemet-kA,” which identifies a sporting style and function that is unique to people of African descent. Although Kemet-kA could be used to analyze any sport that involves people of African descent, this chapter focuses on Africans in America who I identify as “Blacks.” Exploring the similarities between the sporting traditions found in historical African culture and those found in contemporary Black culture allows for a more critical understanding of the influence that “pre-colonial” African culture has had on the world.
