Urbanization, Migration and Development book
The United Nations and various research centers have undertaken a series of important projects and reports which provide statistical overviews of the rates, levels, and future trends of urbanization for countries, regions of the world, and the world as a whole. For many countries, the problem has been complicated by the failure of governments to give adequate, attention, either in research or in policy formation, to the importance of migration and urbanization as factors in national development. The importance attached to population redistribution in less developed nations and to migration as a key component in urban and rural growth and development is understandable, given the rapid population growth in the countries, and the sharp rise in the number and size of big cities. The dramatic difference in the rate of growth of less and more developed nations characterizes both the urban and rural segments of the population, but especially the former.
