ABSTRACT
A general pattern of increasing human presence and resource utilization in Alaska is the basic challenge for maintaining the unique qualities of the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary. The sanctuary is operated to protect the largest known concentration of Alaskan brown bears. Limited opportunities for public viewing are provided under carefully controlled conditions. Demand for McNeil River bear viewing experiences exceeds supply. Viewing opportunities are currently allocated by lottery.
