ABSTRACT

Weather modification through cloud seeding has been developing since shortly after World War II. Increases in the number and size of weather modification activities will be for the purpose of augmenting precipitation for agricultural purposes. Some of these rainmaking projects will be to increase snowpack in mountainous areas for improved water supply for irrigation in the nearby arid and semiarid production regions for agriculture. Weather modification is used to reduce both the hazards from hail and to augment precipitation. Without attempting to minimize the impact of hail on sensitive crops grown in areas with a high hail expectation, the greatest benefit to agriculture from weather modification is through increased rainfall. Weather modification must be improved substantially in order for the client group to accept it on a continuing basis as a dependable technology to use in farm management.
