ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the activities of the Danish Mission Society (DMS) in the area of the present-day state of Tamil Nadu, where the DMS worked primarily in North and South Arcot Districts and in the city of Madras. It focuses on Danish women missionaries' efforts in training and working with Tamil women in evangelism. The chapter considers their involvement in managing schools, in teaching and in nurses' training. As the Danish Mission expanded, many elementary schools were opened in villages and towns, and such major institutions as boarding schools, industrial and teachers" training schools and hospitals were established in small towns which served as bases for work in surrounding villages. The DMS particularly sought out people who had few opportunities. This emphasis required a concentration of effort on rural, generally far-flung communities, and especially on Hindus of low and Harijan castes.
