ABSTRACT

Ich bin zu Ihnen nach Israel gekommen weil ich das gebraucht habe, "I have come to you in Israel because I needed to." With this sentence, which I have translated from his German, the European Jewish survivor poet Paul Celan began a talk here in Tel Aviv in 1969, a few months before his death, when he came for the first time to the land of Israel. I hope you'll understand if I, as a literary translator, borrow Celan's words to begin speaking to you here today.
