ABSTRACT
Speaking in Tel Aviv on the eve of the destruction of European Jewry, Martin Buber, (1954) distressed at the "slavery of collectives" into which mankind had fallen, addressed the central paradox of education in modernity. He observed "It is an idle undertaking to call out, to a mankind that has grown blind to eternity: 'Look the eternal values!'" (p. 110).
