ABSTRACT
The deadliest society of the modern world, and by a considerable margin it would seem, has been the Soviet Union. It would have serious competition, of course, if the reckoning were done in per capita terms. But in sheer numbers over a comparatively short period of time, the country that was to shew the way towards human emancipation has become instead the most life-threatening environment of the epoch.
