ABSTRACT
Why is it in some Arab states, electoral tribes dominate competition and in other states it is parties that compete against one another? This chapter examines the political salience of tribes across Arab states and reviews how tribe and party competition can vary across states. In addition to analysing whether tribes are pro or anti-regime, patterns of tribe and party competition is explained with regard to electoral rules.
