ABSTRACT

The mobilization of a movement for value change depends upon an active political consciousness. The dynamics of oppression associated with the workings of world order remain largely latent and invisible, and as such they remain at the margins of feasibility. The positive side of awakening people to the realities of invisible oppression is to illuminate paths of transition to alternative worlds without oppression. A given social arrangement may be seen as inevitable or in the nature of things. Such was the case for centuries with respect to slavery and various types of lesser servitude. Some realities seem so painful, so pervasive, and so powerful, that rather than confront our helplessness people deny their existence. This denial is obviously a defense mechanism. The pervasiveness of invisible oppression threatens our humanity, breaking contact with the forces that contravene our values and interests. The world order perspective is designed to make a massive assault on the overall politics of invisibility.
