ABSTRACT

One of the consequences of the Green Revolution was worldwide increased interest in and support for agricultural research for technology development. To complement and enhance technology development by international centers and national research organizations, the United States has passed legislation which makes possible extensive use of American universities in both agricultural research and extension. The "system" must enable the technology to work. Government policies and support mechanisms can foster farmer adoption and application of improved technologies. For example, American farmers generally have adopted a new technology on a large scale only when the farmers are convinced it is to their economic advantage to adopt it. Land reform issues are pertinent to the successful transfer, modification, and adoption of new technologies. Strong local institutions are crucial to the technology transfer process. One of the problems of transferring technology to the less developed countries is the shortage of appropriate skills.
