ABSTRACT

The contemporary political dimension is concerned with the relationship between state actors in each dyad. The cultural dimension includes a diverse set of phenomena from arts and literature to the popular transmission of information, perceptions, and values, and their impact on the relations between the unequal partners. In contrast, the relatively better economic performance of the superordinate partner is due to its larger internal market and its ability to influence the larger global economic community. One property of unequal partners is the flow of information through the mass media, especially when there is a common dominant language and culture uniting the two. If the disparity of the economic performance of the two partners increases or concerns are publicly raised about the subordinate country's future competitive economic performance, then the smaller partner will seek closer economic ties and guaranteed commercial access to the larger country's domestic market.
