ABSTRACT

The new era is characterized by two forces: continued acceleration of the increase in knowledge and in product development and fundamental change in the ''business" of medicine. This chapter discusses both of these dynamics and then turn to the role of academic medical centers in the new environment. The field of medicine continues to expand and is undergoing new and exciting transformations. Biomedical science is being redefined by our understanding and knowledge of genetics and molecular structure and functioning with the promise of improving our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. The fusion of the biological and social sciences creates a powerful new synergy that lies at the heart of contemporary medicine's evolving intellectual and patient care activities.
