ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of some fundamental methodological and ethical challenges confronting those doing social science research in Canada. It introduces some of the key aspects of the Canadian context. The importance of understanding context, both historical and contemporary is discussed, as is the question of the ultimate purpose of social science research. The chapter stresses the role of neoliberalism, the experiences of Indigenous peoples, and the increasing importance of digital technologies in shaping contemporary social science research in Canada. In particular, the chapter highlights the importance of paying attention to old and emerging ethical issues, the legacy of colonialism, ongoing questions regarding the implications for privacy and the welfare of research subjects, and the potential of digital technologies to enhance our understanding of social problems. Some limitations of conventional positivist stances on research are reviewed and readers are encouraged to consider the power and privilege accorded to researchers in the research enterprise.
