ABSTRACT

This chapter narrates the history and the present of television in Odisha. Though television started in Odisha in the mid-1970s, its growth began only from the early 1980s. Initially, it was the state that had a monopoly over television as a communication medium. Private players gained entry from the early 1990s, and the ecosphere changed. This chapter attempts to map that change. It also attempts to map the trends and takes a look at the future of television in Odisha, especially when digital technology has replaced the analogue, and smartphones are becoming the preferred platform for viewing television content for the millennials.
