ABSTRACT

Television viewing is second nature to most people. Children are one of the major consumers of both English and regional language television content, watching content ‘made for them’ as well as content ‘made for adults’ in general entertainment channels. It has been observed that children acquire language as they watch TV programmes in various languages. Yet, adult intervention may help in acquiring the language and getting its meaning right for child viewers. This chapter reviews various studies on the effects of television on language acquisition amongst children by asking, “How does exposure to regional language television content help children in developing their language?”
