ABSTRACT

The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, an Affiliated Area of the National Park Service located in Unalaska, Alaska and managed in partnership with the Ounalashka Corporation, struggles to portray the history of World War II in the Aleutians in a way that honors and respects the point of view of all the participants. The National Historic Area’s publications and programs must balance the experiences of the indigenous Unangax̂ (Aleuts) who were forcibly evacuated from the Aleutian Islands during the war, with those of the military personnel, American and Japanese, who were part of the buildup, battles, and aftermath of the Aleutian Campaign. This chapter tells of the mixed success of efforts to achieve peace and healing through commemoration and memorials.
