ABSTRACT

Despite the challenges of World War II underwater cultural heritage in the Pacific being ‘out of sight and out of mind’ and more removed from the civilian non-combatant experiences of war, this chapter outlines how these sites can be considered shared heritage through the shared experience of war. Whether as a soldier, a veteran, a non-combatant, or a family member, many of us have been touched by war within the last century. Recognizing these commonalities of experience can help us draw connections between each other, between the past and present, and between ourselves and the conflict heritage of war. This chapter explores two veteran programs developed to help create shared connections with the shared heritage of a Pacific battlefield.
