ABSTRACT

In 2015, the United Nation’s (UN) member states adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals formalising a global call to action to ‘end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere’ (UN.org, 2019). Emerging out of the eight Millennium Goals 2000–2015, (Un.org, 2019) the UN’s 2030 agenda for sustainable development offered a 15-year road-map to transform our world. This chapter presents an Irish EPA-funded research project, CoDesRes; co-designing for rural resilience through P2P networks and STEAM place-based learning interventions as an exploration of generative creative placemaking that is situated, systemic, and arts-led. The project adapts an existing praxis, the PermaCultural Resilience (pCr) praxis for creative placemaking (McKeown, 2015) towards the development of a place-based STEAM education curriculum resource and localised community action toolkit operating within the context of rural Ireland in the twenty-first century towards a de-growth society. The chapter introduces key themes and concepts pertinent to the approach and outlines the background to the critical praxis used within the research and the broader context of the research ecology. The chapter closes with a presentation of the project’s initial findings and next stages as the team begins to integrate the research findings into the final toolkits for launch in August 2020 and its ongoing work.
