ABSTRACT

To write about the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) and its contributions to public administration is really to write about an organization with three interwoven forms— NASPAA as a public administration organization committed to improvement of public management practice, research, and theory; NASPAA as a higher education organization, committed to improvement of teaching and learning; and NASPAA as a member services association, committed to supporting the development of its constituent programs. Although these activities are of course richly interconnected, they have all generated separate goals and expectations for NASPAA and have been met with varying degrees of success. Where NASPAA has made sustained contributions has been where these three roles have converged.
