ABSTRACT

The greatest threats to survival as individuals and communities were not domestic in scope, but rather global: the effects of human activities on the environment, nuclear weaponry, emerging and resurgent infectious diseases, chemical and biological terrorism and, for nearly half of the reader, devastating poverty. Globalisation is fostering an incredible chasm between the technologically connected and those not connected, between people who are rich and people who are poor, with the latter being separated and excluded. Moral distress affects how one feels about one’s self and one’s integrity. Recently, a new social connection model has been articulated by Iris Young, a sociologist. Concrete ideas for action on what to do as an ethical nurse in a global community are increasingly being shared. Although it is easy to get discouraged and overwhelmed by the senseless and needless suffering in the world, the people can make a difference.
