ABSTRACT

The Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) methodology can be used to reduce the time for any type of changeover; it does not have to be a process that includes changing dies in a stamping or molding machine. The idea behind the SMED methodology is to convert internal elements to external elements. Standardized work is, by definition, the most efficient method of producing the best quality. Standardizing work is necessary for all critical and repetitive processes. In fact, if a low-volume plant were to try to complete typical work standards for all its parts and processes with methods similar to those used in high-volume plants, creating and analyzing all the necessary documentation might lead to bankruptcy. In a high-mix environment, kitting has the advantage of both the person kitting and the operator checking that the correct parts are being used, reducing quality problems.
