ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with examples of work carried out by a small, and changing, group of geographers employed in a headquarters section of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. The recognition and analysis of distributions and relationships by geographers must take place at all levels from local to national, and studies on the latter scale can be particularly valuable. Many aspects of human geography fall to be investigated by geographers in connexion with planning. One which frequently occurs is the problem of ‘journey to work’, a study of which has many immediate practical applications. On a close-contoured map, such as the 1:25,000, which has a contour interval of 25 feet, the position of the proposed project is marked and radial lines are drawn from this at intervals of, usually, 5 degrees with intermediate rays at greater distances.
