ABSTRACT

Indonesia is experiencing a significant and growing series of mismatches between the demands of industry and the capabilities of employees who graduate from educational institutions as the consequence of three key factors – a significant skills mismatch, due to the nature of the higher education system; a qualifications mismatch associated with an inconsistent national curriculum and inadequate quality standards; and finally, a ‘field of study’ mismatch, in which graduates are enrolling in courses which bear little relevance to industry requirements. Whilst the current Indonesian government is developing infrastructure to resolve these mismatches, our recent research study found that all key stakeholders agree that more efforts are required to more proactively address these challenges.
