ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents new research into cases of Nordic hospitality. It discusses some of the practices and spaces of hospitality opposing restriction, crisis discourses, and populism in the Nordic countries in the aftermath of the arrival of migrants in 2015. The book explores contemporary projects that aim at presenting a more generous path than the restrictive welfare state and public policy. It traces Christianist position radically challenges the solidarity option in the Lutheran/Protestant tradition. The book argues the Nordic countries can no longer be considered as exceptional societies when it comes to their take on issues such as social exclusion and crime. It also discusses a project organized by the Danish Red Cross for irregular migrants in Copenhagen. The book describes practice of making the home into a hospitable space for strangers and how this comes with limitations, contestations, and particular power dynamics.
