ABSTRACT

In the first two weeks of June 1992, an estimated 30,000 people converged upon Rio for UNCED. The streets were cleared of the usual city life, the hotels were filled at exorbitant prices. Two independent newspapers dedicated to the conference greeted visitors with the news that the USA had announced its refusal to sign the biodiversity convention, and that the NGOs’ Global Forum might collapse after the first week through lack of funds.
