ABSTRACT
UNCED was the largest international conference everheld. It was, furthermore, not merely an immense event, but the culmination of a preparatory process -indeed, a series of parallel preparatory processes – spanning nearly five years since the initial international discussions which followed publication of the report from the World Commission on Environment and Development, with more than two years of formal negotiations. Many general observations can be drawn from this and the resulting conventions and other agreements.
