ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the dynamic of the music industry in Romania during the period of transition from state-controlled to free-market economy. The dynamic of the music industry at that time was influenced by trends in the Romanian society and economy, and it reflected the changes in tastes, lifestyles, and group identities through the transition. Three distinct periods were identified—the early 1990s, the 2000s, and the 2010s—that correspond to some features of music production and distribution and reference the relationships between artists and their audiences. A stance is taken that the evolution of the Romanian music industry was very much influenced by the development of other cultural and creative industries, such as the audio-visual and advertising industries, and focuses on the changes that took place in the cultural and creative sectors of Romania during the post-socialist period.
