ABSTRACT

The chapter analyses the current state of alternative rock music in Bulgaria through the prism of barriers to entry faced by young artists. It argues that free concerts organised by municipalities spoil live music business in Bulgaria, and make it more difficult for aspiring alternative artists to charge any prices for attending their concerts. The focus of the empirical part of the chapter is on Haskovo municipality that organises special celebrations every year that last from three to seven days. The analysis in this chapter includes nine years of celebrations and draws certain important conclusions about the organisers’ preferences for Bulgarian rock and pop artists from the 1980s.
