ABSTRACT

Social media is integrated into almost every aspect of our lives: work, family, friends, and so on. Therefore, social media is not only a piece of movement building and grassroots organizing, but it is essential for everything from fund-raising to planning direct actions. Without the tools of social media, Standing Rock would not have become the global movement it is, nor would the Women’s March have become the largest U.S. protest in history. While social media enables people to harness support far beyond their own community, it poses new threats and can put individuals and communities at risk. In this chapter, the author discusses how we can better use these tools as we work to strengthen our communities both locally and globally.
