ABSTRACT

The aim of this section is to analyze the development of literature on the economic, social, cultural, environmental, spatial and individual impacts of events from a historical perspective. In the literature review conducted on databases in line with this purpose, 207 published studies were found dealing with impacts of events. Studies were evaluated within the frame of year of publishing, analyzed impact type(s), analyzed event type(s), country of the event and methodology of the research (approach, data gathering method and sampling). Studies were reviewed using qualitative analysis method with document analysis technique. This review was conducted within the frame of three periods: 1985–2000, 2001–2010 and 2011–2019. Findings show that studies dealing with economic impacts as a subject intensely studied have decreased in numbers in the recent years, and studies dealing with other impact types while researching more than one impact have increased. On the other hand, event types studied for their tourism impact were determined to be sports events, cultural celebrations and arts events. Music and combined arts festivals were the most studied festival types within arts events while it was observed that combined festivals have decreased and film festivals have increased in numbers in the recent past. Another observation was that predominantly quantitative studies have mainly adopted qualitative approach in the recent years, and also study designs using both qualitative and quantitative approaches have gained momentum. In addition, other methods were observed to be used in environmental impact studies such as pollution, waste and ecologic footprint calculations.
