ABSTRACT

It is known that community members and event organizers face serious problems in sustaining the continuity of small community activities. Therefore, this study aims to understand the challenges experienced in the organization of a small community event. For this purpose, the Molasses Boiling Festival (“Mac?n Kaynatma Şenliği” in Turkish) which is held in İdrisyayla village of Seyitgazi District of Eskişehir, Turkey was examined. In this qualitative study, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine people consist of organizers and community members. Thematic analysis was applied to the data obtained. The results of the study show that the festival has difficulties in several areas. These fields are presented under three themes: barriers to community participation, challenges from the work itself and funding issues. Implications for other stakeholders are discussed at the end of the study.
