ABSTRACT

A primary goal of this chapter is to provide therapists with practical tools for conceptualizing, assessing, and facilitating LGB couples’ spirituality (i.e., shared values and commitments in response to existential questions) as a resource for coping with stressors, and building and maintaining a positive and supportive relationship. First, minority stress theory is described as the framework for understanding experiences of religion-based discrimination and stigma that may negatively affect LGB couples’ relational functioning. Case examples are offered to illustrate how the spirituality and spiritual values of LGB couples can be used to decrease minority stress and facilitate their relationship goals.
