ABSTRACT

Intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts sexual and gender minority relationships at equal or higher rates compared with cisgender, heterosexual relationships. In addition, systemic injustices (e.g., heterosexism and cissexism) have been associated with higher IPV risk and increased barriers to accessing treatment for IPV. First, an overview and critique of the scholarly literature on IPV within sexual and gender minority relationships is outlined. Based on the existing literature and our clinical experience, recommendations for queer-affirmative screening and treatment of IPV for LGBTQ+ populations are provided. Finally, clinical supervision implications and future research directions are discussed.
