ABSTRACT

Faculty in couple and family therapy (CFT) training programs are tasked with preparing students to provide competent and affirmative therapy to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) clients. However, faculty may or may not have received this training themselves. This chapter provides strategies for faculty to consider in preparing students to practice LGBQ affirmative therapy. These strategies range from individual-level critical self-explorations to programmatic-level considerations for creating and maintaining an affirmative program environment. Additional recommendations and ideas for transforming courses and supervision are provided to assist faculty in teaching the skills and knowledge necessary for practicing LGBQ affirmative therapy. Case study examples including questions for reflection can be found throughout the chapter to illustrate the strategies presented.
