ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses potential risks and benefits for disclosing an LGBTQ+ identity in the context of supervision and therapy. Self-disclosure is a highly debated topic in our field due to the lack of consensus about its meaning. Therapists and supervisors must engage in careful decision-making to determine how self-disclosure will impact the supervisory or therapeutic process. The intersection of identities for the supervisor, therapist, and client becomes key aspects to consider. This chapter provides an overview of the dominant sociopolitical systems that reinforce heteronormativity and cisnormativity that ultimately impact the process of therapy including self-disclosures. Ethical considerations and best practices regarding the self-disclosure of an LGBTQ+ identity in supervision and therapy are outlined.
