ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the history of sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) and the harmful effects of this practice on LGBTQ people and their families. A collaborative, culture-centered, and strengths-based approach is discussed as an effective and ethical approach for joining clients in conversations that examine heterosexist constructs and are relational, non-hierarchical, and affirming. The author demonstrates how evidence-based therapy, community building, and social justice actions can effectively challenge prejudice, discrimination, and privilege.
