ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a critique of current ethical practices, including the code of ethics, ethical principles, and ethical decision-making models, all of which are rooted in heteronormativity. A brief discussion of relational ethics, with its emphasis on relationships, power, and community, is offered as an alternative to traditional individually focused ethics. Next, several ethical issues common to clinical work with LGBTQ clients are presented and examined for heteronormative influences: conversion therapy, training issues and gatekeeping, referring clients out, and affirming trans identities. Finally, a way forward is suggested which includes a focus on relational ethics, and a discussion of the ethical imperative of self-of-therapist work.
