ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a framework for evidence-based practice with bisexual people and their partners. It is an integration of the best available research, the authors’ clinical experience and expertise, and the sociocultural context of bisexual relationships. Bisexual people and their partners often present with concerns similar to straight, gay, or lesbian couples; however, they may experience additional difficulties due to bisexual stigma. This chapter provides an overview of the gender binary system, bisexual erasure, and minority stress, and highlights how each of these impacts the lives and relationships of bisexual people. If clinicians continue to build their awareness regarding these systems, they can center bisexuality and queerness in their practice and foster new understanding between bisexual people and their partners.
