ABSTRACT

The introductory chapter sets out the framework of the volume and summarizes the contents of the subsequent chapters. The terms “misinformation” and “disinformation” are parsed, distinguishing each from related concepts such as “lies”, “falsehoods”, and “humbug”. The relevance of misinformation in democracies is also explained, with a special emphasis on its effects on referenda. The summary of chapters is grouped according to the three-part organization of the book. It highlights the main concepts in each chapter, as well as how the chapters relate to each other.
