ABSTRACT

The great online pivot occasioned by Covid-19 shifted most doctoral supervision to Skype, Zoom or Teams meetings, researcher development programmes went online, and postgraduate students formed support networks through departmental Facebook or WhatsApp groups. Online education was one of the fastest growing areas of Higher Education, even before social distancing measures hastened the shift to online or blended learning for the majority of students in 2020. Social media is now integrated into the scholarly communications system, and as Sugimoto et al summarise, many studies show high usage of social media for dissemination and promotion, with the use of Altmetrics set to encourage this further. Investigations of doctoral researchers who blog suggest it is a means of community building and professional development, and a valuable way of creating an academic self. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
