ABSTRACT

In the intervening years the principles of Open Access have naturalised the dissemination of research online. The maintenance of research networks through Facebook, LinkedIn and other groups is commonplace. The articulation of research in and through social media is predicated on a level of access and technical proficiency that might not be universal. Doctoral researchers’ knowledge of the technology of online interaction generally outstrips their supervisors’, yet many are insecure about inhabiting social media platforms as researchers. Most institutions have a social media policy, and guidance on social media etiquette should be shared early in a candidate’s registration – better still made a part of induction events. Researchers gain most confidence and take ownership of their research when they are informed about their peers and discover connections within their environment and situation.
