ABSTRACT

Chinese contemporary music and fashion idol Li Yuchun, born in Chengdu in 1984, is well known for her tomboy-style gender ambiguity, a localized as well as an exported androgyny. However, now that she is in her thirties, she has come to additionally represent, for certain fans, an image of Chinese feminine singledom that intersects with newly differentiated heterosexual imaginaries. Using ethnographic approaches and textual analyses, this chapter explores Mainland Chinese fans’ usage of Li Yuchun’s images to articulate newly emerging ideas of hetero-feminine singledom that run counter to the official, widespread promotion of marriage.
