ABSTRACT

The operations of media industries are complex, ambivalent, and contested, making them difficult to explain. Developing in-class activities around media industries provides one way to make the work of these institutions meaningful for students. Following a few strategic steps (consideration of what you want students to learn, allotting the appropriate amount of time to the activity, thinking through what students will need to know, avoiding overcomplicating the experience for students, and building in time for meaningful reflection) allows teachers to design engaging and productive activities to aid in student engagement and understanding. The chapter explains these strategies in detail, offering examples of each, culminating into a case study of one specific in-class activity and how it enhances student learning.
