ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on two generations of Latinas and how they entered into and engaged academe as faculty members. Maricela and Lucinda received their doctorates in 1997 and 2010 and recently began a mentoring relationship in which Maricela helps Lucinda address tenure-related goals and issues. Here, they discuss differences and similarities in their experience, including steps that institutions have recently taken to support Latina faculty. The two also describe their need to develop voice and community and discuss self-empowerment within institutions. They unpack silencing processes and highlight the importance of embracing authenticity and voice while negotiating their presence in academe. The chapter adds to our understanding of what has improved and what still needs work to create culturally responsive environments for Latina faculty.
