ABSTRACT

Poetic Inquiry—a tributary of arts-based research—has become an accepted qualitative research method; as has the willingness to use poetry as a tool during the research process. Poetic Inquiry encompasses research which uses poetry as a mode of data collection, as a method of data processing, and as a way to represent data. This chapter contextualizes a brief history of Poetic Inquiry and offers examples of how poetry can be incorporated into fieldnote practices to yield new ways of understanding. The chapter concludes by addressing potential apprehensions around using poetry in fieldnote practices and offers suggestions in creating poetic fieldnotes and thinking through researcher-participant power dynamics.
