ABSTRACT

Drawing on the metaphor of a square dance as an epistemic resource, we describe fieldnotes as both tools for and sources of research data. As we dance across research designs, we narrate the ways in which our identities as researchers are reflected in the adaptive nature of the fieldnotes. Through discussion and reflection, we identify how our expansive view of fieldnotes enabled us to innovate our uses of the tools while growing in our identities as academics. This chapter illustrates multiple uses of fieldnotes and invites readers to innovate their own construction and uses of this adaptive tool.
